El Mercurio | Territorial tax redesign
Amid public debate over the impact of the property tax on certain segments of the population, specialists consulted by El Mercurio, a Chilean national daily, consider alternatives for a redesign of this tax, lowering it and removing the lack of transparency in its calculation.
Maria Soledad Diharasarri Lecanda, partner in charge of the tax area, was interviewed by El Mercurio, and states that it is essential to have an in-depth, serious and realistic discussion on the land tax. “Although property taxes are levied on real estate according to a certain commercial value – defined by the IRS arbitrarily or at least not very transparently-, there is a need for clear criteria to determine the commercial value of these; it should be considered the owners’ payment capacity and the number of properties owned”, she says.
